I'm a dual-topic specialist with over 20 years of experience in technology management, turning complex technical and legal stuff, like GDPR, into practical, everyday actions, while maintaining an empathetic “people first” approach. I love building and educating on procedures and controls that actually work for businesses and their people. I bring together creativity and empathy with tech and governance smarts to increase value, get everyone on board, and make sure things run smoothly.
I provide engaging and fun programs in team leadership and management, cybersecurity, and privacy.
My career journey began in tech, with stints in call centres, desktop support, network architecture, and even development (which loved in college and hated in practice). I found my sweet spot and first-love in what is now known as DevOps, where I could combine my technical and programming skills. I worked my way up to become a senior technical specialist at a multinational software company, becoming the "go-to" guy for any technical hiccups, no matter where in the world they popped up.
In 2009, I took the plunge into management and team leadership, gaining experience in areas like call centres, software development, support, IT, DevOps, information security, product development, and professional services. What really gets me going in these roles is mentoring new managers. I love helping them build their leadership skills and embrace the challenges and rewards of management through training and mentorship - I call it "teaching them to swim".
On a technical side, I firmly believe that Privacy and Security aren't roadblocks, but rather guidelines that build trust with consumers and help businesses scale. My mission is to help tech-driven companies put the "3 Ps" – Policy, Process, and People – into action to achieve these goals.
I've got a Master of Science (Cum Laude) in the Management of Technology and Innovation under my belt, a Paralegal Certificate from the University of Cape Town, and I'm a Certified International Privacy Practitioner (Europe). I've also been lucky enough to receive several awards for my work in management and innovation.
Here are a few of my key strengths:
Understanding Development and Developers: I've been there and done that in software development, from technical support and DevOps to development and quality assurance.
Understanding Technology and its People: My background includes services, infrastructure, data centres, the cloud, networking, and security.
Understanding Product: I've led product development in the compliance space, focusing on controls monitoring and risk management, leading multiple multinational and cross-functional teams.
Understanding Governance: I'm passionate about good governance and making Privacy and Security a priority in everything I do.
