Turning Disabilities into Possibilities

Cory B. Johnson is a Diversity Educator/Motivational Speaker who speaks on 'Turning Disabilities into Possibilities'. His main objective is to convey the message that everyone has a disability of sorts.  He believes that there are four different types of disabilities:

- The ones some people are born with

- The ones we will all inherit sometime throughout our lives

- The ones we impose on ourselves

- The ones we impose on each other

How we treat ourselves and each other has the potential to create disabilities.

Firstly, Cory speaks to the fact that he was born with Cerebral Palsy, and suffered a stroke at 11 years old. This addresses the first two points, regarding the disabilities that some people are born with, and the ones we inherit at a later time.  Cory shares with his audience the way he was treated, and the discrimination he endured.

Secondly, he discusses the disabilities that we impose on ourselves and each other. There are many different disabilities that we all have:

  • - Lying
  • - Acting Angry/Starting a fight
  • - Trying to be perfect-
  • - Thinking "I'm not good enough"
  • - Criticizing & Blaming -
  • - Being controlling or manipulative
  • - Not Participating
  • - Gossiping
  • - Procrastination
  • - Using Drugs or Alcohol
