Gunars is an "outside the box" thinker and presenter.

Gunars Balodis was born in a refugee camp in Germany and raised on a farm just south of Barrie, Ontario

Gunars joined the RCAF in 1964 and graduated as an engineer from the Royal Military College in 1968. He served in the Canadian Forces for 22 exciting years. His military career included –

• flying the Argus aircraft and tracking Russian submarines in the North Atlantic,
• conducting airborne test and evaluations in the Atlantic and the Arctic,
• earning a Master's Degree in physics,
• commanding a special intelligence unit in Halifax, and
• serving as the Senior Staff Officer for Requirements at Air Command HQ in Winnipeg.

Following retirement from the Canadian Forces in 1986, Gunars joined Computing Devices Company in Ottawa for five years to establish an acoustics research group. This group developed radically new equipment that has since become the world standard for submarine hunting equipment

These years of training, operations, leadership and management in the Canadian Forces and at Computing Devices provided Gunars the strong foundation needed to be a successful Founding Partner and Business Manager for Music for Young Children by Frances Balodis Ltd from 1980 to 2010. By 2010, Music for Young children had grown from one teacher with 40 students in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to 950 teachers and 24,000 students around the world!

Gunars retired from Music for Young Children in 2010 and moved to Muskoka from Ottawa in 2011. In addition to singing with the Muskoka Men of Song, he is involved with Masons, Scottish Rite, Shriners, Probus, public speaking, gardening and property management.
